a selection of fresh produce, condiments and herbs to make nutritional meals,
Poor nutrition is widespread among Cambodia’s rural poor, particularly in young children and pregnant and nursing women. It is estimated that almost 40% of rural children suffer from stunted growth due to malnutrition and around 14% of rural women of reproductive age are underweight*. Anaemia and vitamin deficiencies are a cause of serious health issues across the country.
Many rural Cambodian families subsist on a diet of rice to which they add a small amount of protein or vegetables. While rice may provide the energy needed to get through the day, most rural families do not consume enough meat and vegetables to receive the necessary minerals and vitamins to stay healthy. Poor health leads to greater susceptibility to illness, which in turn leads to inability to work and increased medical expenses, all of which increase the financial pressure on already struggling families. This can be a devastating cycle.
Working within the community, BBFF frequently comes across families who are struggling to meet their daily needs. It is not uncommon for the main meal to be rice with fish sauce or a rice porridge (essentially rice and water) flavoured with a condiment of some kind. Whilst we work to provide sustainable solutions rather than just welfare, at times urgent assistance is needed to get a family by.
With this in mind, BBFF has designed a nutrition hamper program which combines some immediate food relief with a longer term plan for families who are struggling. Our special nutrition hamper contains a selection of produce, condiments and herbs for a few days’ immediate relief together with a vegetable seed kit and tools, for the family to start a small home garden to grow their own food. With some general guidance on growing vegetables, making compost and eating healthily, we aim to empower struggling families to improve food sustainability and bring nutritional diversity into their diet.
Our program aims to give families the means to start a vegetable garden around their home in which they can grow a mix of nutritional herbs and vegetables that will supplement their diet, whilst also ensuring that a family has enough food to eat for a few days.
